Pledge Ruled Unconstitutional
The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment was never meant to prohibit any and all reference to God, merely to prohibit the establishment of a state religion (like a Church of the United States). It states that, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion." Over the years, the Court has interpreted that to mean that the State must neither advance nor inhibit religious practice, may not endorse a particular religion, and may not coerce anyone to support or participate in religious activities. What the Court will not affirm, but should, is that the U.S. has always been a monotheistic state in that it has always affirmed the existence of the Creator. The phrase "under God" was placed in the pledge during the Cold War as a contrast to our battle with Soviet communism. The Soviet Union was officially an atheist state. They lost, we won. Perhaps God was on our side (as well as on our currency, and in our founding documents).

Bigger and Better
Finally, a proposal for rebuilding the World Trade Center that I can really get behind. There are people in the world who hate the bigger/better ethos of America, they hate American capitalism, they hate American freedom, they hate American values, so I say, let's rebuild and make it BIGGER and BETTER.

Starved North Koreans Eating Grass to Survive
A news article about starvation in North Korea that does not mention military spending really does a disservice to readers. Famine in North Korea is not a natural disaster but the result of a ruthlessly cruel dictatorship that would rather spend money on weapons than feed starving people.

Bush Calls for Arafat's Removal
Well, it's about time. I was getting concerned that we had failed to learn the lessons of the past, namely that little psycho mindgame called appeasement...just give him some land and all will be well. Fortunately, wiser heads have prevailed, Bush has said it's time for Arafat to go. Go where? Does it matter?

Activists Dig in for Week of G8 Protest in Canada
So, here they go again, isn't there some way the media can cover an important international event without allowing protestors to hijack their coverage? The story is not the protesters, the story is the summit. The protestors might make an interesting sidebar if they had something intelligent to say (that would be news) rather than throwing rocks at police or engaging in hunger strikes. Maybe we should ask McDonald's to send care packages? Headline: Starving Anti-Globalists Saved by McDonald's.

Public Protests NPR Link Policy
Oh no, don't look now, but it's another unauthorized LINK to the National Public Radio web page. My bad, sorry, didn't mean to, really. By the way, if you would like to link to this blog, feel free. And, feelings aside, you are actually free to do so. Because it is on the Net, it is free for your use, enjoyment, fun, or commentary. If you wish to control, dominate, restrict, own, or otherwise monopolize information, then please get off the Net.
