U.S. Soldier Dies After Afghanistan Attack
The Pentagon revealed this week that Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher James Speer, 28, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on Aug. 7th, of injuries sustained in combat. Sgt. Speer is the 41st combat casualty in the war. Though the number of civilian casualties of the war in Afghanistan has become a controversial issue, I'm not sure anyone is going out of their way to note the American casualties. So, in case you are wondering, the latest American to give his life in the line of duty has a name and face:

America's Right To Fight Iraq
John Chipman of the Financial Times affirms my earlier analysis of the status of the Gulf War and the legal basis of continued hostilities, though in much greater detail, of course. Needless to say, I agree with his conclusion that the Security Council resolutions provide the context for American action against Iraq, as well as the necessary campaign to rally public opinion in advance of any conflict.

Islamic Militants Rebuff Move to Curb Suicide Bombings
The New York Times reports today that Hamas has declined to end homicide bombings. According to the article, "Hamas spokesman Ismail Abu Shanab, a graduate of Colorado State University, told Israeli radio his group would continue to strike within Israel's 1948 borders." I am shocked that this terrorist leader was educated in the United States. In the same way that universities grant honorary degrees for honorable achievement, I would like to suggest that Colorado State University revoke his degree for dishonorable achievement. Or, at the very least, not invite him to Homecoming.

Experts Sent to Madagascar to Tackle Killer Flu
A few Americans have died (less than 10) from the West Nile virus and it is portrayed in the media as a major national health threat. Over 300 people die in a flu outbreak in Africa, but you probably won't hear much about that in the media. I wonder why?
