Watchdog Urges Bush to Kill Pentagon Data-Mine Plan
This sounds very Orwellian to me. I wonder if there are sufficient safeguards built into this "Total Information Awareness" system to protect the rights of American citizens? Our system is built on the rule of law, checks and balances, and accountability. With this kind of technology, you have to wonder, who watches the watchers?

Dean’s office preparing for protests
I read today in my campus newspaper that the university is preparing contingency plans for dealing with anti-war protests. They envision massive unrest involving large numbers of people and feel it prudent to plan to deploy their shock troops in advance. I can't help but wonder what world they are living in. I agree with Glenn Reynolds, campus protest doesn't exactly have the cachet that it once did, primarily due to the changes in higher education over the last few decades. See, the problem is that war protests involve stating an opinion, and opinions tend to offend people, and offending people is greatly discouraged by modern politically correct institutions. So, I don't really see modern universities becoming springboards of a modern anti-war movement, not unless they first give out event t-shirts and water bottles with a cool logo on them to the protesters while allowing equal time to the offended group de jour to protest. I mean, they will have to have a pro-war rally at some point just for the sake of fairness.

Last U.S. SLA Fugitive Captured in South Africa
Well, this is interesting, but what I really want to know is, after all of that effort kidnapping people and then being on the run for years and years...did they ever free the long suffering people of Symbia? I hope the Symbionese appreciate how long and hard the SLA worked on their behalf. It probably says something deeply symbolic of the 60s that these misguided radicals did all of that to liberate a people that don't even exist. Wow, man, peace out.
