On This Day: Truman Signs Marshall Plan
I've been decompressing after following the war a bit too closely, hence the lack of recent posts. I never meant this to be exclusively a war blog and thought that I might turn my attention to other topics. Today, however, I was reminded of how America responded to a past world crisis. On April 3, 1948, President Truman signed the Marshall Plan, which allocated more than $5 billion in aid for 16 European countries. The anti-war protestors tell us that America is an imperialist power bent on conquest. If this is true, America is a most peculiar imperial power that demands neither loyalty nor tribute from conquered states. The U.S. spent billions rebuilding Europe after Word War II and if this historical precedent is any guide, the U.S. will likely spend billions to rebuild Iraq after the war. This generosity of spirit and nobility of purpose inspires in me only one hope, long live the Empire.
